    Driving & Dyslexia

     

    We are currently assisting a local authority and one of their employees to overcome difficulties caused by dyslexia.   

     

    Research has shown that dyslexic drivers often suffer from a lack of spatial awareness, slower reactions in some cases and - highly relevant - an impaired facility for “automaticity”.  This is the brain function that allows us to drive perfectly safely, while at the same time engaging in another function - say conversation - without impairing driving ability.  Dyslexics often find this very difficult.  Any distraction such as conversation or listening to the radio can impact on driving.

     

    Our research, with the active cooperation of the driver, has shown that dyslexia need not be a block to safe driving.  There are practical steps which can be taken to assist the driver by carefully creating the right environment.
